When the World Won’t Stop Moving
Why Dizziness and Vertigo Aren’t Just in Your Head
We’ve all experienced brief moments of lightheadedness. However, when dizziness returns over and over again—or worse, becomes a constant unwelcome companion–then it’s time to take action.
There are several reasons why dizziness and vertigo (a specific type of dizziness marked by a spinning sensation) might become a daily challenge. Both symptoms are common after concussions. Vertigo is also often a sign of an underlying issue with your inner ear, including chronic conditions like Meniere’s disease.
However, neither are symptoms you have to live with. At Moore Myoworx, our team understands how vertigo and dizziness can disrupt your quality of life, which is why we offer specialized therapy to help you find long-term relief.
A Deeper Dive Into Dizziness and Vertigo
Dizziness is a broad term that can refer to a range of sensations, including lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or disorientation. You’ve likely experienced it briefly when you stand up too quickly.
Vertigo, however, is more specific. It refers to a false sense of motion in which you or your surroundings feel like they’re spinning. You may have experienced a brief bout of vertigo after stepping off a roller coaster.
Vertigo, Dizziness, and Concussions
Both dizziness and vertigo can be common symptoms after a concussion or other traumatic brain injury. There are a couple of reasons for this:
- The damage can disrupt connections between your brain and your peripheral vestibular system, a structure in your inner ear that interprets balance signals from your body. These disruptions can cause bouts of vertigo.
- Your vestibular system itself may have been affected by the injury, such as microscopic damage or fluid shifts, leading to miscommunication in balance signaling.
- Concussions often cause neck trauma, which can lead to muscle tension or misalignment in your cervical spine that feeds confusing input into your body’s balance system, leading to dizziness.

Other Causes of Persistent Vertigo
Concussions aren’t the only reason someone might develop dizziness or vertigo. Several chronic conditions can also cause these symptoms, such as BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), Meniere’s disease, and vestibular migraines.
The Connection Between Dizziness, Vertigo, and Falls
Unfortunately, both dizziness and vertigo aren’t just uncomfortable symptoms. If left untreated, they can dramatically increase your fall risk.
When your brain receives mismatched signals from your body’s balance system, the whole process gets thrown off. Even small changes in head position or movement can cause instability, increasing the risk of stumbling or losing footing. This, in turn, makes you more likely to experience a fall, especially when turning quickly or walking on uneven surfaces.
Worse, many people with balance issues develop a fear of falling, which leads to reduced activity, muscle weakness, and a further decline in balance control. This becomes a cycle in which the reduced movement leads to poorer coordination, more instability, and even greater risk of falling and suffering a major injury.
