A Better Understanding of Fibromyalgia Starts Here

Living with fibromyalgia is challenging enough. Persistent pain, fatigue, and brain fog can all have a big impact on your quality of life. But then you consider how misunderstood the condition is, and the challenges can really start adding up.

At Moore Myoworx, we’ve seen firsthand how these widespread myths can affect people with fibromyalgia. At best, they can leave you feeling discouraged or unheard. At worst, they can prevent you from getting the care you need.

That’s why a big part of our approach is helping our patients understand both fibromyalgia itself and their treatment options. We aim to move beyond mere symptom relief to help you see how your nervous system, muscles, and movement patterns can work together to more effectively manage fibromyalgia.

Breaking Down the Biggest Myths About Fibromyalgia

Myth #1: Fibromyalgia Is “All in Your Head”

This is probably one of the most damaging fibromyalgia myths out there, so let’s get this out of the way first: Fibromyalgia is a real condition involving changes in how the brain and nervous system process pain.

While the condition isn’t fully understood, it’s likely rooted in central sensitization, which makes your spinal cord and brain more sensitive over time. As a result, your body’s “volume control” for pain gets turned up higher than it should, and ordinary touch or gentle movements get misread by the brain as painful danger signals.

Because symptoms involve the nervous system, they may not always be visible on X-rays or MRI scans. That does not make them any less real.

Breaking Down the Biggest Myths About Fibromyalgia

Myth #2: Exercise Makes Fibromyalgia Worse

Many people with fibromyalgia find that exercise can trigger pain or other symptoms, so it’s understandable that they might be hesitant to try exercise as a form of treatment. However, avoiding movement completely can lead to muscle weakness, reduced endurance, and joint stiffness–all of which can affect pain sensitivity over time.

The key is finding movement that works for your current ability level. We want to stress that therapeutic exercise at Moore Myoworx isn’t the same as working out at a gym. Our therapists take the time to learn about your specific needs and will select exercises designed to calm your nervous system while slowly improving your strength and movement confidence. That way, you can get back to the activities that matter most to you.

What we won’t do is try to push you beyond your limits.

Myth #3: If Medications Haven’t Worked, Nothing Else Will

Fibromyalgia is a complex condition that usually responds best to a combination of treatment strategies. Medication might help manage or reduce some symptoms, but it doesn’t address all of the factors that contribute to fibromyalgia, including sleep quality, muscle tension, and nervous system sensitivity.

What works better is a highly personalized therapy plan that pulls from different treatment techniques based on your needs. This might include hands-on therapy to reduce muscle tension and improve mobility, pacing strategies to avoid flare-ups, or breathing techniques to help regulate your nervous system.

Most of our patients find that small improvements across several areas often add up to meaningful changes in daily life.

Myth #4: You’ll Just Have to Learn to Live With It

Fibromyalgia might be a chronic condition, but there are absolutely steps you can take to make it more manageable. And we’re not talking about pushing yourself through pain, either! Instead, treatment focuses on helping your body respond differently to movement and daily activities while improving overall function.

Care typically begins with a thorough evaluation to understand how your nervous system, muscles, balance, and movement patterns may be contributing to your symptoms. As you work through your plan, our therapists will continue to adjust your program based on your progress, helping you see real results over time.

Many of our patients discover they can do more than they expected once they learn to work with their bodies rather than against them.

Stress and Fibromyalgia: What You Need to Know

Have you ever had a fibro flare during a particular stressful period in your life? It’s not your imagination: stress can definitely impact fibromyalgia symptoms and make them harder to manage.

How Stress Can Intensify Fibromyalgia

As we’ve seen, fibromyalgia is closely linked to the nervous system, which helps regulate how your body responds to both physical and emotional stress.

When you’re under stress, your body triggers a fight-or-flight response by releasing hormones meant to prepare you to respond to a short-term challenge. Unfortunately, stress in the modern world often continues for days at a time, at which point the nervous system can become overactive. This, in turn, can worsen fibromyalgia symptoms.

During periods of high stress, you might experience:

  • Increased widespread pain
  • Muscle tightness and stiffness
  • Greater fatigue
  • Poor sleep quality, which can also further increase pain sensitivity
  • Fibro fog (that is, difficulty concentrating)

Supporting Both the Body and the Nervous System

At Moore Myoworx, we take a holistic approach to fibromyalgia management, and that includes strategies to help you minimize stress (and therefore minimize flares). We might walk you through calming breathing techniques or other relaxation methods to help reduce the effects of ongoing stress.

Take the First Step Toward Feeling Better

Stress doesn’t cause fibromyalgia, but it can absolutely make symptoms more intense. Learning how stress affects your body is an important part of managing flare-ups and improving daily function. Exercise of the Month

Prone Shoulder Extension

(Shoulders, Upper Back)

Start by lying facedown on a table. Place a rolled towel under your forehead. Hold the dumbbell in one hand. Position yourself so that the arm holding the dumbbell is hanging off the table. Move your shoulder that is hanging off the table upwards slightly so that your shoulders are in line with each other. Keeping your arm straight during the movement, raise the dumbbell straight back so that at the top of the movement, your arm is parallel with your body. Lower the dumbbell back to the starting position with control. 3 Sets, 10 Reps. (Materials needed: towel, dumbbell)
